ADA 2011 Architecture Dissertation Award

AWR is pleased to invite students around the world to take part in a competition for graduate theses on sustainable architecture and design innovation. The goal of this competition is to increase and promote sustainability culture and green architecture.

Participation is open to all graduates of architecture and engineering faculties, from all over the world. The theses, whether individual or group work, must have been defended between January 1, 2009 and October 31, 2011.

Theses submitted to the competition should fall under the following categories: urban planning, architecture and technology



Arch. Antonio Angelillo - Italy - Jury President 

He graduated in architecture in Venice in 1986, lives and works in Milan. From 1989 to 1997 he was editor of the international journal "Casabella" by publishing articles and reports on the phenomena that cross the architecture and the contemporary city. In 1994 he founded the Italian Centre for Architecture ACMA, of which he is director. Organized in Italy and abroad with many initiatives for the promotion of the qualities of urban space and architecture (exhibitions, conferences, seminars, workshops, competitions) involving the protagonists of the current issues and collecting consensus with authorities and institutions public on solving the emerging problems of cities and territory. Since 1986, conducts research and teaching at various universities including Italian IUAV of Venice, Milan Polytechnic, the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara, the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Counts in his professional participation, numerous architectural competitions, including two first prizes: Europan 2 in Gorizia-Nova Gorica (1991) and Centopiazze Competition in Rome (1995). Among the leading experts in Luso-Iberian architecture has edited several books of which the best known are: Portuguese contemporary architectures (Giancarlo Politi Editore, Trevi 1995), Alvaro Siza. Writings on Architecture (Skira, Milan 1997) and Gonçalo Byrne. Works and projects (Electa, Milan 1998).


Arch. Alessandro Micucci - Italy 


Eng. Fabio Bisegna - Italy 

PhD and Researcher at the Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energetic Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, graduated in 2000. He worked on several subject areas: environmental acoustics, energy savings and environmental quality in buildings, natural and artificial lighting. He is the professor of several courses at the Faculty of Architecture, among which: "Lighting and colour design", "Comfort and HVAC Systems", "HVAC Systems and Light Design", "Building Physics". He is the author of about 70 papers published in International and National Congresses and Journals. He is a reviewer for important international conferences and for international scientific journals. He is member of some national and international research groups supported by CNR, MIUR, IEA and Italian and European Universities. He was the italian key-contact for the IEA Annex 45 (2004-2008) "Energy Efficient Electric Lighting for Buildings". Now, he is a member of some CIE (Commission nternationale de l'Eclairage) technical committees. In 2010, he was a member of the project “Integrated Technologies for the Conservation and valorization of the cultural heritage characterised by problematic accessibility through a GIS platform“, selected by the MPA for the Shangai 2010 Expo (Italian Innovators). Actually, in the lighting field, he works on the visual, non-visual  and energetic aspects linked to the natural and artificial light. Other research fields are the spectral characterisation of ancient materials, the acoustics and lighting of ancient theatres and archaeological sites, the sustainable fruition of cultural heritage.


Dir. Stefano Gangli - Italy

Stefano Gangli is an italian Graphic Designer living  and working in Rome. He studied at "IED" in Rome. He is the Founder, Creative Director and key-man of the agency  "SignDesign - Creatività per la comunicazione", founded in 2000. "SignDesign" born as advertsing and graphic design agency: corporate image, brand building, advertise  ATL and BTL are the core business. Since 2007 he is Creative Director and Editor-in-Chief of "LivingRoome - interior design magazine". After the training in graphic design at the IED in Rome, enters the staff of teachers for courses in graphics, he was appointed coordinator in addition to teaching skills in communication courses and events. It's creator, coordinator and teacher of master's degree in Communication Design at the LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome. Since 2008  is a member of the Executive Council of the delegation ADI Lazio with responsibility for communication.


Arch. Jody Patterson  - Canada

Jody Patterson received her degree in Architecture from the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) in 2005. In 2009 she earned a Master’s degree in Architecture at the University of Waterloo, where she also assisted in various courses and research projects. She has worked for four years at several architecture and urban design firms in Canada and Italy, including one year as an Intern Architect with DA Architects + Planners of Vancouver, BC. She is currently assisting design studio courses in Rome, and also does freelance consulting work.


Arch. Laura Pedata - Italy 

She Graduated in 2005 at the University of Rome “Sapienza”, faculty of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni”. Experienced in Environmental Design and Sustainability. Her Degree Thesis work was a Project for a Bioclimatic Hotel in Dubai. She carried out research projects on Shading Devices, innovative energy saving devices in Architecture and innovative materials. Before joining Un-Group she cooperated with the ITACA (now DATA) Department of the University of Rome “Sapienza”, contributing to many important competitions in Italy and overseas with prize winning results. In 2007 she won a Fulbright Scholarship and she attended a Master in Architecture II at UCLA in Los Angeles (CA), where she graduated with Distinction in June 2008. Currently employed as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Graduate School of Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni”.

Arch. Giacomo Ortenzi - Italy

He graduated in architecture in 2009 at the Sapienza University of Rome. Work experience in several architecture agency such as Ma0 (emmeazero), Battisti-Tucci associati, and ODBC Odile Decq-Benoit Cornette. Internship experience in Fendi Store Planning. Actually attending the II level master in Bioarchitecture and sustainable environmental technology and working in his agency "giac0mo" as an architect following several project in renovation and new construction.


Arch. Spyridon Andrikou - Athens

Graduated in Architecture at the Sapienza University of RomeLudovico Quaroni. As a co-founder of the studiouno in Rome has participated and been awarded in various national and international architecture competitions. During the years 2004-2008 he worked at the University of Rome La Sapienza; in social housing and housing for emergency projects in the department of architecture - ‘housing lab’- and as an assistant in the architectural composition laboratory and the interior design laboratory of the architecture school L.Quaroni. He actually lives and works in Athens where has founded the studio/ena’ architecture office.
